The Federal Government has been called upon to strengthen the alternative and clean energy sector to ease the pressure on the regular power supply system of the country.
Technicians and sundry players in the alternative energy sector in Nigeria, made the call while speaking at the 10th anniversary celebration of Nexgen Energy, held at Nexgen’s head office in Ibadan, Oyo State, recently.
The stakeholders noted that poor power supply in the country had led more Nigerians to look in the direction of alternative energy, especially solar energy and therefore called for concerted efforts to strengthen the sector to maximise the numerous benefits.
Nexgen Energy, as part of activities to mark the 10th anniversary, organised a training in which trainees were brought up to speed on the cutting-edge alternative energy products, equipment and techniques which are the hallmark of Nexgen Energy.
Speaking on the occasion, a trainer and alternative energy expert, Mr Adeniyi Omotosho, said those in the business were recording successes and that “the report we are receiving from our end users shows that the future is a sure one when it comes to clean energy.”
Omotosho said alternative, clean energy needs government look-in and investment, saying “This is one area the government should focus on because it creates employment for people and you have a sure power supply for people.”
He said there was the need for publicity and orientation on clean energy “because people are very difficult to change”, saying “When people see the enormous benefits in alternative energy and how cost-effective it is, they might still not understand.”
Omotosho commended Nexgen for the training, saying more of such should be encouraged by other stakeholders and the government to bring alternative energy closer to the people.
Also speaking on the occasion, Mr. Oluyombo Awojobi noted that more people were embracing renewable energy because there had not been enough power from the national grid, “and so everybody is looking for means of getting electricity supply for their homes.”
According to him, the most common source of alternative electricity known among Nigerians was solar but said the government could “help further develop the business by subsidising panels and inverters because presently they are a bit on the high side.”
Awojobi said Nexgen Energy and its product Techfine had been of immense benefit to his company and praised Nexgen for its quality products and services.
Mrs Oluwakemi Ayekiitan, Customer Service Executive for Nexgen Energy, said there was a need for more knowledge on what renewable or green energy was all about and also education on return on investment in renewable.
She said Nexgen deals mainly in solar renewable energy which promotes a healthier and safer planet for humanity because it doesn’t emit gas into the air “and once you do your installation, you have peace.”
Ayekiitan said Nexgen meant ease of doing business, peace and joy for its customers “in the sense that we see the joy in people’s faces when you light up their homes. In a way, we relieve them of the worries of cost, expenses and running around because of power because once you do your installation, you have your peace. The peace and happiness of our customers is our goal.”
