In a decisive move to restore peace and stability in Rivers State, the National Assembly has approved President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency.
This action has drawn commendation from Chief Hon. Obidike Chukwuebuka, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who praised the lawmakers for protecting democracy and ensuring the return of normalcy to the state.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja after a meeting at the National Assembly complex, Hon. Obidike highlighted the critical role of the National Assembly in upholding democratic principles and the rule of law.
He emphasised that approving the state of emergency reflects the lawmakers’ dedication to safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy and fostering peace and stability.
“This decision is a testament to the National Assembly’s commitment to democracy and national unity. It reassures Nigerians that their elected representatives are prioritising security, governance, and the overall well-being of the people,” Obidike stated.
Hon. Obidike’s remarks come at a time when democratic institutions across Africa face growing challenges. According to a report by International IDEA, while democracy in Africa has remained relatively stable, concerns persist about the erosion of democratic norms and the rise of authoritarianism in some nations.
The National Assembly’s swift approval of the state of emergency signals Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to democratic governance. Hon. Obidike lauded the lawmakers for their proactive stance, describing them as guardians of democracy and champions of the rule of law.
“Once again, Nigeria’s National Assembly has reaffirmed its position as a pillar of democracy, not just in the country, but across Africa,” he added.
The state of emergency declaration in Rivers State marks a significant intervention aimed at restoring order and protecting democratic values. With the National Assembly’s firm leadership, Nigeria continues to stand as a beacon of democracy on the African continent.
