The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Honourable Abbas Tajudeen, led a delegation of lawmakers to Maiduguri, Borno State, on Tuesday to express solidarity with the government and people following the devastating floods that struck the city.
The floods have displaced thousands and resulted in 37 deaths and 58 injuries, according to data from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). Abbas described the floods as an “act of God.”
In his address, Abbas announced a donation of N100 million to support relief efforts, stating, “We stand in solidarity with the people of Borno State during this difficult time.
“We will do everything in our power to support relief efforts and ensure that measures are put in place to prevent such tragedies in the future.”
Represented by Ado Doguwa, the Speaker emphasised the importance of collaboration, stating that the House would work closely with stakeholders to mobilise resources for relief efforts.
Governor Babagana Zulum expressed his appreciation for Abbas’ gesture, highlighting it as a demonstration of the federal government’s commitment to supporting the state.
The disaster has impacted over 414,000 people, contaminated water sources, destroyed infrastructure, and increased the risk of disease outbreaks. The United Nations has launched a response to bolster government relief efforts.
According to Tribune Online, relief materials, including hot meals, water purification tablets, and emergency health services, are being distributed to affected communities.
