An appeal has been made to the Governors of the southwest to refrain from involvement in the upcoming zonal delegates conference of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

Retired Deputy General Secretary of the Union and Coordinator of South West Elders, Alhaji Moshood Ajao, issued the appeal while speaking with journalists in Osogbo on Tuesday.

Ajao elaborated that the NURTW has its own established process for electing leaders, and interference from the Governors could potentially lead to negative consequences for the Union.

The Coordinator of the Elders Committee recalled that in 2019, the National body of NURTW zoned the office of the President to the southwest, during which Tajudeen Baruwa emerged as the President of the Union through an arrangement.

The former Deputy General Secretary further explained that Tajudeen Agbede, who also expressed interest in the presidency, had previously been endorsed at a Southwest elders meeting of the Union held in Ilorin, Kwara state last Monday.

He mentioned that Alhaji Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya, also known as MC Oluomo, had earlier introduced Agbede to the elders committee as the next President of NURTW.

Ajao expressed dissatisfaction with the three states’ Chairmen of NURTW, who, in a viral video, claimed to have endorsed MC Oluomo as the next President of the Union. He explained that such an endorsement process is foreign to NURTW.

He mentioned that MC Oluomo, in his previous role as Chairman of Lagos NURTW, dissolved the State Executive of the Union and refused to step down for Mustapha Adio Adekunle in accordance with the NURTW constitution.

Ajao advised the Lagos state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to support the inauguration of a new executive of NURTW since MC Oluomo has quit office as the forthcoming zonal delegates conference will not be held without the inauguration of an executive in Lagos State.
