Songs, dances as pupils celebrate Akinoshun’s ‘homecoming’

IT was a day of songs, dances and choreography as pupils of NW5 Baptist Primary School, Inalende, Ibadan, celebrated the ‘homecoming’ of one of the school’s alumnus, Dr Abbey Akinoshun.

Dr Akinoshun, a United Kingdom-based philanthropist, had, in the past, through his foundation, Dr Abbey Akinoshun Foundation (DAAF), supported the school in different projects, so it was not a surprise when the teachers and pupils trooped out en masse to welcome the man who had been so much of a support for the school.

They also believed that with his physical presence in the school, many of them will benefit from his large heart.

On arrival, Dr Akinoshun, with other members of the DAAF team, toured the school to know where it needs assistance.

After the tour, Dr Akinoshun was then treated to performances by the pupils who felt elated to finally meet the man they had long hoped to meet in person because of his philanthropic gestures to the school and indigent pupils.

“Many former pupils of this school are now in higher positions around the world today and that means you can also achieve great things.

“You must be determined where you want to be in life and work towards it. When I say ‘work towards your goals,’ it means you should take your education seriously and if you do, you can reach the peak of your chosen career.

“Don’t ever look at your family background, but look ahead and forge ahead.

“The fact that I attended this school shows you also can achieve great things in life.

“In fact, many former pupils are also doing great in their careers and you can also be like them.

“You can even go further to become president, or governor, or senator; the secret is just for you to focus on your education,” Dr Akinoshun said.

He then announced the donation of books and stationeries to the school.

He also announced the donation of new school uniforms, shoes, bags, writing materials, among others to those who need them.

Also, pupils whose parents are struggling to pay for their common entrance examinations were supported as Dr Akinoshun paid for a number of such pupils.

Furthermore, he said his foundation, DAAF, will continue to support the school in the areas it needs help in order to make learning conducive for the pupils.

While appreciating Dr Akinoshun on behalf of the school, a pupil, Favour Abegunde, said the donations would go a long way in supporting parents who are finding it difficult economically these days.

Abegunde said: “The school uniforms of many of us are torn and we had mended them on several occasions.

“Therefore, through Dr Akinoshun, some of us will get to wear new uniforms.

“He also donated shoes, books and other items.

“The most important thing, however, is that we have seen that we can also become great in life because Dr Akinoshun also attended our school and he was once like us. His visit has given us the encouragement to work harder in our studies and become great so that we can also return to the school in the future and give pupils something.”
