SON intensifies war against substandard products

IN a bid to win the war against substandard products in the country, Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has entered into partnership with the Nigerian Association of Small Scale Industrialists (NASSI) in the area of sensitisation in order to boost the quality of locally-produced goods.

Speaking at a congress organised for members of the association in Abuja, the Acting Director General of SON, Dr Paul Angya, said the programme was designed to educate them on their collective responsibility in determining the performance of the economic sector through the production of quality products.

“We can all join hands in developing relevant standards that will regulate what we produce. It is evident that government is committed to working harmoniously with the organised private sector to move the country forward,” he said.

Angya went further to say that SON’s commitment to NASSI in advancing the cause of small businesses was because the organisation believed in stimulating the uptake of standards for sectorial self–regulations as is currently the practice in developed economies.

He stated further that SON had established National Quality Infrastructure that would enhance the economic growth of the nation with focus on agricultural products for which the organisation had developed standard and codes of practice to enable farmers and dealers of commodities produce export products of high quality.

Responding, the President of NASSI, Ezekiel Essien, noted that the conference was aimed at showcasing the potential of NASSI in the economic diversification drive.

He said the challenges of NASSI were principally organisational, financial and packaging for export, adding that resolution of these challenges would lead to a rise in the economic growth in the country.
