IN recognition of the crucial role of stable power supply in blood storage and transfusion services, Director General of the National Blood Service Agency (NBSA), Professor Saleh Yuguda, says he is spearheading the installation of solar-powered inverters, air conditioners and refrigerators in NBSA Ibadan and other centres across the country.
Professor Yuguda, in a release, said this will significantly reduce the impact of power outages, ensure quality and safe blood collection, screening, and storage, and enhance staff working conditions.
Yuguda, who assured his commitment to enhancing the working conditions of the agency, said the provision of solar-powered equipment will ensure uninterrupted power supply and, in the long run, quality service delivery.
The release added, “While progress is being made, Prof Saleh remains determined to push for even greater advancement, ensuring that NBSA evolves into a world-class institution capable of meeting the nation’s blood supply demand efficiently.”

Dr Aworanti Oladapo, a consultant haematologist, in a reaction, commended the solarization of blood storage and transfusion services, stating that “power supply is one of the most important needs of any blood transfusion centre.”
“NBSA Ibadan now has solar-powered inverters that can allow us to have electricity for 24 hours. We can now keep the blood and blood products at the right temperature and do our tests anytime we want, thereby enhancing blood safety and our ability to respond to emergencies,” he said.
He stated that blood is life and the commitment of both government and privately owned healthcare facilities in ensuring the set goals of NBSA are achieved, particularly during Professor Saleh’s tenure as the agency’s director general.
