The Sokoto State Government is set to recruit 3,000 new workers into the state civil service as part of efforts to curb unemployment and strengthen key sectors.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu made the announcement while inaugurating a committee to supervise the exercise at Government House, Sokoto.
According to the Governor, the recruitment drive is designed to reduce youth restiveness and discourage involvement in social vices, which he said are often driven by joblessness.
“We want to give opportunities to qualified young people, especially unemployed graduates with NCE, HND, or degree qualifications, across all 23 local government areas,” Aliyu said.
He directed the committee to focus on areas where manpower shortages are affecting service delivery, stressing that only competent candidates capable of adding value to the system would be considered.
Aliyu charged the members to carry out their assignment with fairness, diligence, and transparency, noting that they were selected based on proven integrity and years of experience in public service.
The Governor expressed concern over the increasing number of informants aiding criminal activities for small amounts of money, describing it as one of the negative effects of unemployment.
“This is why we must keep creating opportunities to engage our youths meaningfully so they can contribute positively to society,” he said.
He highlighted previous empowerment initiatives under his administration, including vocational training for thousands of youths and women in trades like plumbing, electrical work, tailoring, perfume and pomade production, and make-up artistry, along with the provision of start-up capital and tools.
Aliyu reassured the people of Sokoto State of his government’s commitment to the welfare of every citizen, regardless of gender or location, and thanked them for their continued support.
Responding, the chairman of the recruitment committee, Alhaji Jelani Kalgo, praised the Governor for what he described as a timely and courageous step to fill manpower gaps in the civil service.
He promised that the committee would conduct the exercise strictly according to the guidelines provided and deliver a process that would meet the expectations of the public.
