Sokoto State Executive Council has approved the purchase of 1,000 motorcycles, in addition to another 500 tricycles, as part of the youth empowerment program of the current administration.
This was part of the resolution reached at the end of the State Executive Council meeting held at the council chambers on Friday.
The council, in the meeting led by the State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, has also resolved to issue identification cards to students of public secondary schools.
Briefing newsmen on the development, the Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education, Tukur Arkali, explained that the decision was necessary because the state was spending a lot on Senior Secondary School Examinations.
“Last year alone, we spent one billion Naira on NECO and WAEC for our students.
“And this year, we are anticipating 33,000 candidates and with the current increment in registration fees by WAEC and NECO, we will spend about N1.9 billion.
“Some principals and examination officers used to enlist external candidates, thus adding more burden on the state government.
