Sokoto Commissioner of Police, CP Ali Kaigama has reassured residents of the State of his commitment to remain focused and professional in the discharge of duties by protecting rights of individuals.
The CP stated this in his goodwill message at the State Congress of Nigerian Union of Journalists, Sokoto State Council on Saturday.
The CP who expressed his satisfaction with the good working relationship between the council and the state command further assured residents of the state of protection of their individual human rights without fair or favor.
Delivering his paper presentation titled, “Mass media and national security in Nigeria: Balancing professional ethics with national interests”, Abubakar Mohammed Sokoto, of the Sociology Department, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, urge journalist to put the interest of the country first in their reportage.
He called for more verification of news items before going to press to reduce spreading of fake news in society.
Speaking in his remarks, the state commissioner for information and orientation, Sambo Bello Danchadi, assured working journalists in the state of government support to enable them discharge their responsibilities to the citizens.
He however appealed to journalists not only in the state but across the country to focus more on developmental journalism.
Earlier in his opening remarks, the state chairman of the council, Dalhatu Abdullahi Maigori of the NTA Sokoto network centre, said the Congress is to review issues concerning the operations of working journalists in the state.
While calling on members of the council in the state to renew their identity cards, he called on all working journalists in the state to be objective in their reportage by adhering strictly to professional ethics of journalism.
