The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Sokoto has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike over the Federal Government’s failure to resolve outstanding issues affecting Nigerian universities.
Members of the union from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto State University, and Shehu Shagari University of Education staged a protest on Tuesday, calling for urgent government intervention.

Addressing journalists during the protest, Prof. Nurudeen Almustapha, Chairman of the UDUS chapter, urged the government to implement the Ahmed-led committee report submitted in February 2025, which addresses funding, university autonomy, and academic freedom.
He also rejected the proposed loan scheme for lecturers, describing it as a “poisoned chalice” aimed at enslaving academics. Instead, ASUU demanded the release of withheld salaries and the signing of the renegotiated agreement that has remained pending since 2021.
The union accused government of neglecting the education sector, citing inadequate funding, interference in university governance, and policies that undermine academic freedom. According to ASUU, these actions have weakened institutions, demoralized staff, and lowered the quality of education.
ASUU called on stakeholders, including the National Assembly, NIREC, NANS, and traditional rulers, to prevail on government to avert another nationwide shutdown.
Frequent ASUU strikes have disrupted academic calendars for decades, leaving students and parents apprehensive over another looming crisis.
