Six things to know about Charlie Kirk

The news of Charlie Kirk’s death has shocked political circles in the United States and beyond.

Tribune Online reports that the 31-year-old conservative activist, who was the founder of Turning Point USA, was shot dead on a university campus in Utah. A suspect has since been taken into custody.

For many Nigerians who may not be familiar with him, here are key things to know about Charlie Kirk:

1. He founded Turning Point USA at just 18

Kirk started the conservative student movement Turning Point USA in 2012, aiming to promote free markets and limited government among young people.

2. He had a controversial political voice

He opposed COVID-19 policies, promoted anti-transgender rhetoric, and amplified false claims about the 2020 election. A past remark in which he said some gun deaths were an “unfortunate cost” of the Second Amendment resurfaced after his death. 

3. He was closely linked to Donald Trump

Kirk was a staunch supporter of United States President Donald Trump and enjoyed close ties with the Trump family. Trump described him as “great and legendary” in his tribute.

4. Author and media personality

Kirk wrote the bestselling The MAGA Doctrine, hosted a popular podcast, and built a major social media following, making him a central figure in conservative media.

5. Faith and family life

Married to former Miss Arizona Erika Frantzve, with whom he had two children, Kirk often highlighted his Christian faith and family values in his public life.

6. Death on campus

He was shot at Utah Valley University during a public event. Reports say the gunman fired from an academic building 100–200 yards away. His wife and children were on campus at the time. A suspect is in custody.
