Six killed in Sapele as truck carrying sugarcane overturns on failed road

No fewer than six people were crushed to death in Sapele, Delta State, as a truck carrying sugarcane fell on them while trying to navigate the failed road portion at the Amukpe roundabout.

A witness recounted that the six passengers were passengers sitting on top of the truck before the accident occurred.

He said that as they saw the truck tilting towards disaster, they jumped out of the truck to escape, but unfortunately, the truck fell towards them, crushing them to death.

Sapele residents have raised concerns about the danger of the failed road portion at the Amukpe roundabout as a result of this accident.

They called on authorities to quickly come to the aid of road users and save lives, especially at the Amukpe portion of the dilapidated Benin-Warri highway.

Fabian Otolo, a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, testified that accidents occur at the failed spot on a daily basis.

According to him, the last accident at the failed portion last weekend claimed the lives of six people onboard the truck that fell.

He called on the federal and state governments to fix the road to avert further deaths and man-hour losses.
