The Ogun State Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has elected new executives for another four-year tenure.

The election occurred at the Valley View Hall within the Government House in Oke-Igbein, Abeokuta, the state capital. Comrade Akolawole Shoremi emerged as the chairman, running unopposed.

Other executives elected at the event include Deputy Chairman Adejoke Adeoye, Vice-Chairman (West) Kehinde Damilola, Vice-Chairman (East) Adeola Adeyemi, Vice-Chairman (Central) Toyo Joseph, State Secretary Dotun Opaleye, and Social Secretary Azeez Idowu.

Additional officers elected include Public Relations Officer (PRO) Yunus Fatai, Treasurer Odunayo Felicia, Programs Officer Shittu Saheed, Assistant PRO Ayodele Oduala, Deputy Secretary Kehinde Ademuyiwa, Organizing Secretary (Central) Anuoluwapo Abiola, Organizing Secretary (Ogun East) Bunmi Ajibola, Organizing Secretary (Ogun West) Adeyemi Kojeku, Financial Secretary Adetutu Babatunde, Assistant Programs Officer Kayode Dahunsi, and Auditor Okikiola Fayomi.

With this election, the new executive will take over from the Abdul-Jabar Ayelaagbe-led administration.

Speaking to reporters after his election, Shoremi called on the Federal Government to address the various challenges facing the youth, particularly the issue of high unemployment. He stated that his administration would reposition the council, as outlined in his manifesto titled “Ogun Youth Council of Our Dreams.” The council will work to facilitate capacity-building and developmental skills programs for youths in the state.

Shoremi also mentioned that the council would continue to advocate for greater youth inclusion in leadership positions at all levels of government and push for policies that would directly and indirectly benefit the youth.

The Osun State Youth Affairs Commissioner, Olalekan Olagunju, who spoke to the press at the event, encouraged the leaders of the group to discourage social vices, particularly drug abuse and cultism.

Other dignitaries present at the event included the Commissioner for Sports in Ogun State, Wasiu Isiaka, NYCN National President Sokubo Sara-Igbe Sokubo, a representative from the Federal Ministry of Youth Affairs, Mr. Victor Abia, and the Director of the Youth Department at the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Ogun State, Mr. Adetokunbo Salami. NYCN chairmen from Lagos, Olalekan Biliamin; Osun, Abdul-Majeed Oladimeji; Ekiti, Segun Famuyibo; Oyo, Abdul-Salam Abdul-Quadri, and the Returning Officer of the election, Solomon Idiogbe, were also in attendance.
