DISTURBED by the unprofessional conduct, the Bayelsa State Commandantof the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Mr Desmond Agu said two of his men who allegedly harassed and shot at the car of a medical Doctor in Yenagoa if found culpable would not go unpunished.
It could be recalled that a medical doctor, Dr Bekewari Samsom Sampou was allegedly harassed and his car shot at by two Civil Defenders, SCA Akpoghomhe Jude and IC Ogodo Richman on the 28th of April, 2017.
Agu stated this in Yenagoa while briefing journalists on the incidence which is already generating concerns amongst members of the public.
The State Commandant, who told journalists that NSCDC was disturbed by any incidence that tends to cast doubts on its integrity, also said that the state chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association had petitioned him on the matter.
“Our operations and presence are geared towards protection of public interests by preventing and discouraging acts capable of sabotaging the economy and hindering public peace.
In discharging our mandate, which are clearly spelt out, we emphasize strict adherence to the principles of human rights and the rule of law; our officers and men are trained to observe these principles and are constantly reminded to apply restraints especially in their dealings with the public and resist any temptation that can make them misuse their fire arms”, he said.
The NSCDC Commander further recalled that the Commandant-General of NSCDC has ordered full investigation into the 28 April, 2017 shooting incidence, adding that a seven-man committee had been set up to that effect.
“We have therefore set up a seven-man committee chaired by Head of Intelligence and Investigation Department, Bayelsa State Command, Deputy Commandant, Anyanwu G.C.” while Deputy Commandant Idima A.U. will serve as Secretary.
He noted that the committee was expected to submit its report on May 8, 2017.
“We appeal to the general public to remain calm as the committee undertakes its assignment. We assure you that if indicted, the Civil Defenders involved will not go unpunished,” Agu submitted.
He therefore warned officers and men of the NSCDC to uphold the code of conduct of the corps and desist from any act capable of denting the image of civil defence, and that anybody found wanting will be sanctioned.
In a related development, the State NSCDC Commander also dispel the false story making the round that men of the command beat an Okada rider, one Mr Lawrence to death at their office located at Opolo in Yenagoa.
Against public call that the victim be provided dead or alive, Agu said Lawrence is alive; and that he was treated at the Diette Koki Hospital at Opolo and that he has since recuperated, and drove away in his Keke-Napep.
He however noted that to quell the rumour, the corps instituted a search and when found the public would be duly informed.
