More than seven people suspected to be cult members were on Sunday injured as rival cult members went on the rampage in the Oto Awori area of Ijanikin in Lagos State.
The Nigerian Tribune gathered that the Sunday clash was a reprisal attack over two cult members who were killed in the last two weeks.
The police in the state confirmed the incident and added that two persons were arrested in connection with the Sunday mayhem and that different weapons were recovered from them.
A resident of the area who simply identified herself as Esther told Nigerian Tribune that the Sunday clash was “one of the numerous incidents” that residents had witnessed in the area in the last month.
The resident added that “suspected members of Eiye and Aye have been fighting in different parts of this community for more than a week now.Ā
“You just hear gunshots and people will begin to run in different directions. They use those opportunities to rob and molest innocent residents.”Ā
She also continued that “the Sunday incident was said to be a reprisal by one of the groups, whose members were killed last week.”Ā
The Sunday attack started around the Ile Oba area when a member of a rival cult group was sighted in the area.
The image maker in charge of the state police command, Muyiwa Adejobi, while speaking on the incident said, “theĀ police operatives attached to Ijanikin Division of the Lagos State Police Command On 25th July 2021, at about 11 am, arrested two suspected cultists at Oto Awori, Ijanikin Area of Lagos State.”Ā
He also added that “The police operatives raced to the scene and arrested the two suspects while responding to a distress call from good samaritans that two groups of cultists were on rampage and attacking one another with dangerous weapons along Oto Awori Ijanikin Expressway by Ile Oba Bus Stop.Ā
“Due to the swift response of the police, normalcy was immediately restored to the area and no life was lost in the clash.”Ā
Adejobi, a chief superintendent of police also said, “The suspected cultists arrested are Taiye Israel, m, andĀ Isiaka Afeez, m. Items recovered from them include one axe, some cutlasses, assorted charms and weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.”Ā
According to Adejobi “The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Hakeem Odumosu, has ordered that the suspects be transferred to the Command’s Strike Team, Ikeja, for proper investigation and possible arrest of other members of the gangs.
“He further directed the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ijanikin Division to step up his anti-crime strategies in curbing crimes and criminality, especially cultism, in his area of responsibility.”
CP Hakeem Odumosu has also directed tactical commanders and other special squads in the Command to immediately embark on a constant raid of black spots and criminal hideouts in the area as it is applicable to other parts of Lagos State, in compliance with the command’s zero tolerance for crimes and criminality, particularly cultism.Ā
The commissioner of police, therefore, warned cultists, miscreants and those who have plans of causing unrest and engaging themselves in criminal acts in the state to steer clear of Lagos State as the command and other security agencies will not relent in their spirited efforts to sustain and improve on the present security and peace being enjoyed by residents of Lagos State.Ā
