He made the appeal in Benin City when presenting a scholarship to 87 indigents students drawn from public secondary schools and tertiary institutions across the senatorial district.
Urhoghide said the bedrock of any developed countries is anchored on its levels of educational development and how much they have committed to it.
The Senator said his passion to help the indigents students in the society was based on the premium he has placed on education.
He said, “Because of the premium I place on education, I said I will make sure I cater for the indigent students. It became a vow to me. The chosen are those that have the brains to pursue their education.
“It is not a winner takes it all. That is why you see people across religious and political divide benefiting from the scholarship.”
One of the beneficiaries, Peter Ojo, an SS II student of Edo College, thanked the donor for his kind gesture and urged other well-meaning Nigerians to emulate him.
Edo State chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dan Orbih, while commending the donor, said the gesture came at a time when the country was passing through recession, adding that those who were saddled with the responsibility of developing the education sector, were busy siphoning the money set aside for its development.
He said, “There is no doubt that Senator Matthew Urhoghide has done very well. He is a good ambassador of PDP and that this event is coming at a time that I can refer to as strange and hard times.
“A private individual has decided to put his personal resources towards the development of education.
“To this end, I think we must commend and praise Senator Matthew Urhoghide for a good job he is doing for the people of Edo South Senatorial district.
“Again, what is unique about this presentation is that, he is giving this support to deserving students who are financially distressed irrespective of religion, political parties and what have you and as far as they are citizens of our state, residents in the senatorial district he is representing, he has found them worthy and has decided to give support to them. I think this is one rare opportunity these students are having.
