Pa Ayo Adebanjo, the leader of Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has described the late Senator Olabiyi Durojaiye as the pride of Yoruba society.
Adebanjo, in a chat with Tribune Online, said he was saddened with the news of the death of Durojaiye as Nigeria has lost yet another forthright man.
He stated that Durojaiye is still useful to society therefore he would be greatly missed for the role he played in the politics of the country.
He said that “The news of his death is sad. Although he is not a young man, he is still useful to society. The role he played in the politics of the country cannot easily be forgotten. He was a forthright man and one of the pride of the Yoruba society.
“I had my disagreement with him but that’s notwithstanding, the role he played with those that reconciled with the Fulani oligarchy, I think he would have regretted that by now.
But notwithstanding, his role in nation-building cannot be forgotten. The fact that he made one of two mistakes did not erase the contributions he had made. I am one of those that still recognized the contributions he had made.
It was not long ago that I had a discussion with him. We were thinking of rebuilding the nation in spite of all our differences. I was sad when I heard the news of his death. He was a man who had a perfect understanding of the issues of the country. There is no doubt about that, we will greatly miss him.”
Senator Olabiyi Durojaiye who represented Ogun East constituency of Ogun State in the fourth republic on the platform of Alliance for Democracy (AD) reportedly died in the early hours of Tuesday in Lagos at the age of 88.
