Secondary school students protest killing of colleague in Nasarawa

THE streets of Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State was greeted with protest on Monday, by students of  Government Science School, Lafia, following the alleged killing of a JSS II student of the school, Amos Ovyeh by Khali Al-makura, son of the state governor.

According to our feelers, the governor’s son knocked down the JSS II student with his vehicle at about 8 pm on Sunday when he (the governor’s son) was returning from night club where he was said to be drunk.

According to our source, the incident occurred when the student went out to buy torchlight batteries from a nearby shop by the school gate as a result of non availability of electricity in the school, when he met his death.

An eye witness who spoke to Tribune Online, said that immediately the incident occurred, the governor’s son ran into a nearby mosque when he was being chased by students after knocking to death their school mate, pleading with people at the mosque to rescue him from the hands of the students.

He disclosed further that, it was discovered at the mosque that the Al-Makura’s son was highly intoxicated with alcohol as his body oozed with liquid content suspected to be either lager beer or some kind of dry gin.

Tribune Online reports that, the students who were carrying placards and leaves, marched for over five kilometres from the school to Government House to express their dissatisfaction with the incident.

Addressing the protesting students, the Commissioner of Education, Tijani Ahmed, appealed to the students and the family of the deceased student to remain calm and assured them that  the culprit would be brought to book.

He added that since the accident happened around 8pm on Sunday March 19, both the management and the authority of the school have not rested.

He appealed to the family to take solace in God and disclosed that the governor has already constituted a committee that would meet with the family and commence arrangement for the burial.

Confirming the incident, the Police Area Commander in charge of Lafia, Maikudi Shehu, said the culprit is currently in detention.

“The driver and the car are in police custody and I can assure the public that the police would unravelled the real cause of the matter”, he said.
