A 21-year-old scrap collector, Bashiru Abubakar, who allegedly stabbed his friend with a knife, was on Tuesday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.
Abubakar, who resides at Sakamori area of Ogba in Ikeja area of Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of assault and assault occasioning harm.
Police Insp. Benson Emuerhi, the prosecutor, told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 4 at 4.00 p.m. at Computer Village, Ikeja.
According to Emuehi, the accused stabbed his friend, Faruku Mohammed, on his two legs causing him grievous harm.
He said the trouble started when the accused sent the complainant’s younger brother on an errand.
“The complainant said he had warned the accused to stop sending his younger brother on errands.
“A serious fight ensued and the accused brought out a dagger and stabbed the complainant.
“Mohammed was rushed to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, (LASUTH) because of the serious injuries he received,” he said.
Emuehi said the case was reported at the police station and the accused was arrested for questioning.
The offences contravened Sections 172 and 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that both sections stipulate three years imprisonment for offenders.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.
In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule Amzat, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.
Amzat said that the sureties should be gainfully employed with an evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
In addition, the sureties must be blood relations of the accused.
Amzat adjourned the case until June 18 for the mention.
