Sanwo Olu, Peter Obi, Momoh, Aboyeji, others blame insecurity on youths neglect

The unending security challenges in Nigeria have been blamed on the neglect of the youths, which comprises a larger percentage of the country for a long period of time by successive governments.

This was the submission of Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo Olu, former Governor Peter Obi, Dr John Momoh, Rev Sam Aboyeji, Prof Mrs Cecelia Oladapo and others at the 8th edition of the annual public lecture of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria tagged “National Security Challenges: Youths Neglect? which took place on Tuesday at the church headquarters in Lagos.

The eminent Nigerians all agreed to the fact that the Nigerian youths have been abandoned for a long and that the effect of that is the security challenges, currently being witnessed in different parts of the country.

Guest speaker at the occasion, former governor of Anambra State Peter Obi noted that governments over the years in Nigeria failed to invest in Education and areas of the economy that have to do with the youths.

The former governor said “we have not invested in education and the consequent is what we are facing today. We have abandoned education, which is the most important item that can change the youths positively.”

” We are in a country that refuses to negotiate with professors but negotiates with bandits.” the former governor also pointed out.

On the solution to the security challenges in the country, the former governor opined that “elect competent people with conscience,” noting that they are in the position.

He also advised that the citizens of Nigeria should not “celebrate and worship politicians and people of questionable character, saying that these people are the problems that Nigeria is facing.

Professor Mrs Oladapo traced the security challenges in Nigeria to the colonial period when formal education was rejected in the northern part of the country.

” The problem that we kept in the cooler 1905 is what we are facing today. It is the youths that are being used for all these things.”

“We use our youths as political thugs during campaigns. That is the only thing we use our youths for,” the university don posited.

She also added that ” the children that were neglected and abandoned in those days are the youths of today and they are the ones causing problems, not only in our homes but in all parts of the nation.”

” In most of our secondary schools. today, the teachers are not expected to correct the students. Our value system has gone down the drains.”

She advised that “at least 30% of the budgetary allocation should be assigned to education, as a way of not only improving the education but also improving revenue through it.”

Chairman of the occasion, John Momoh pointed out that “a relationship exists between crime and unemployment. It is inconceivable that we can neglect a population as massive as our youths.”

Lagos governor, Babajide Sanwo Olu, who was represented by Miss Mosunmola Sasore Permanent Secretary Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources described the security challenges in the country as ” the direct consequence of our youths in the past.”

The governor however said that his administration values the youths and has put a lot of measures in place to engage them positively.”

Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti state who was represented at the occasion by Hon Ayodele Jinadu, the state commissioner for Special Duty, in his goodwill message advised that “all hands must be on deck to solve the problem of insecurity in Nigeria.”

He also stated that the Ekiti State government is preparing the youths in the state for greater tomorrow with investments in education, agriculture and other areas of governance.”

General Overseer of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria, Rev Sam Aboyeji in his welcome address, said that the public lecture is not just a prelude to the church’s 66th Annual Convention but” a modest contribution to the quest for the growth and development of Nigeria .”
