Sanwo-Olu has no hand in Obasa’s impeachment as Lagos Speaker — Aide

The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Lagos State Governor, Mr. Gboyega Akosile has denied claims that the governor played a role in the impeachment of former Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, Akosile dismissed the rumors of Sanwo-Olu’s involvement, emphasising that the impeachment was strictly a legislative matter.

“No, no, no. There is absolutely nothing true about that. I mean, no, the governor does not have a hand in it. It was purely a legislative matter.

“The governor is busy with serious matters, busy with taking care of the over 20 million Lagos population.

“I mean, we saw on the media, just like you, that the legislators removed the Speaker. We watched like every other person. The governor must have watched it like any other person.

“I don’t think there is anything more to it other than that. So, absolutely, there is no hand of the governor in the impeachment of the Speaker,” Akosile said.

Tribune Online reports that Obasa, a sixth-term lawmaker and third-term Speaker, was removed on Monday during an emergency plenary session.

Thirty-two out of 40 lawmakers voted to impeach him over allegations of gross misconduct.

Following his removal, Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda (APC-Apapa I) was elected as the new Speaker, while Fatai Adebola (APC-Ibeju-Lekki I) became the Deputy Speaker.

During the session, the lawmakers also indefinitely suspended the Clerk of the Assembly, Olalekan Onafeko, and dissolved all principal positions and standing committees.
