… Actions may disrupt flight services
A coalition of aviation unions in Nigeria has directed all staff of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency to commence a strike indefinitely starting Monday, August 11, over a salary dispute.
The decision was announced in a joint notice issued on August 7 by representatives of the four major unions in the aviation sector.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the unions, a joint letter dated July 31, 2025, the unions had issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, over the prolonged delay in implementing a new salary structure for workers under the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency.
According to the statement, the strike directive affects all personnel of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) and is expected to disrupt flight operations nationwide.
The National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE) said said in the statement that the action follows an expired ultimatum given to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.
“As you are all aware, the notice of withdrawal of services given on 30th July expires at the end of today. Therefore, all workers of NAMA are hereby directed to stop all services with effect from Monday, 11th August 2025, at 05:00hrs indefinitely.
“All airlines, allied aviation service providers and the flying public are hereby advised to make alternative travel arrangements,” the statement noted.
The unions also stated that the strike notice has been formally sent to relevant authorities, including the NAMA and FAAN managing directors, airport security heads, and airline operators.
The aviation workers explained that negotiations for the revised salary structure were concluded over eight months ago, but implementation has stalled without explanation, noting that the development has brought about frustration over the prolonged delay, warning that their patience has run out.
