The Ogun State House of Assembly passed a resolution on Thursday seeking the bail of Hon. Muhammed Dare Bello, the lawmaker representing Sagamu 1 State Constituency.
The lawmaker was arrested by the Department of State Services operatives on allegations that he harboured some suspected members of a cult group at his official quarters in Abeokuta.
During a plenary session, the Assembly requested the release of the lawmaker pending the conclusion of the investigation related to a clash between rival groups, which resulted in the deaths of many people.
The resolution followed a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Yusuf Sheriff, seconded by the Minority Leader, Lukman Adeleye, and supported by other lawmakers through a voice vote.
In their various submissions, the members advocated for the bail of the detained lawmaker. They emphasised that the security agency could continue their investigation without depriving the lawmaker of his constitutional duty to represent his constituency.
They pointed out that since the allegations were bailable, administrative bail could be granted to the lawmaker, allowing him to continue representing his constituency during the investigation rather than keeping him in custody for over two weeks.”
