US President, Donald Trump has declared that Russia continues to pose an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.
On Wednesday morning, Trump signed an executive order reaffirming a national emergency first declared in 2022 in response to Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
“I have received additional information from various senior officials on, among other things, the actions of the Government of the Russian Federation with respect to the situation in Ukraine,” the order states.
“After considering this additional information, among other things, I find that the national emergency described in Executive Order 14066 continues and that the actions and policies of the Government of the Russian Federation continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.”
The decision allows the US government to maintain sanctions and other measures aimed at deterring Russia’s involvement in Ukraine and any other activities deemed hostile to American interests.
The move comes amid persistent global concerns about Russia’s aggression in the region and ongoing support for separatist forces in eastern Ukraine.
By extending the emergency declaration, the Trump administration signals its continued commitment to countering Russian influence and holding the Kremlin accountable for destabilizing actions on the international stage.
