Rotary Club of Iyaganku-Ibadan has enrolled 17 students on different vocational training at Mary Aikenhead Centre, Religious Sisters Of Charity as part of its humanitarian service.
The beneficiaries were drawn from different schools in Ibadan, and would be engaged for three-month trainings in tailoring, ICT, production of perfume, candles, soap, as well as catering.
Speaking, president of the club, Mrs Olubunnmi Oni, said the beneficiaries are school leavers, adding that the initiative is to help them gain valuable skills for a better future.
She noted that Rotary Club is a non-governmental organisations where members contribute money to positively impact lives.
Oni said: “The programne is for secondary school leavers who are not really doing anything right now and we would like to empower them. We want to take a lot of children off the streets because if they’re empowered they are likely not to get into crime and drugs.
“So we’re trying to make sure they learn some skills like in tailoring, in computer and ICT, production of perfume, candles, soap, as well as catering.
“They’ll learn continental dishes, African dishes, and in tailoring, they’ll learn to make different designs so we’re trying to expose them to all kinds of trades so that instead of just waiting for this one year to gain admission into the university, they’d have gotten something that can even spur them on, even while they’re in the university, they can make money on their own through these skills.
“A lot of students are out there who are needlessly not doing anything much, so we’ll like to give them a direction.
“The graining is free of charge for the students because Rotary members have contributed their personal resources to make an impact in the lives of people.”
Vocational Director of the club for 2024/25, Mr Olayiwola Awotoye, said they want to train the students in their areas of interest like fashion designing, catering services, branding, antiseptic production, computer and ICT, and some other things being rendered by the Religious Sisters of Charity here in New Garage, Ibadan.
”This programme will take like three months to run, after three months, certificates will be issued to successful candidates, and we hope that after the vocational study, the beneficiaries will start working with their skills and get things for themselves to make ends meet.
“On the financial commitment from Rotary Club of Iyaganku-Ibadan about N1.5 million was provided for this programme from the last Rotary year, and with the additional N.5 million that’s coming for this Rotary year, I believe that additional sum of money will be provided for it as well so that we can have a successful programme for the students and other participants that’ll join them later.”
