Rotary Club of Ibadan Jericho-Metro has provided food items to an orphanage home and commissioned a borehole water project at a school in Ibadan so as to improve the well-being of the inmates of the orphanage and students.
The beneficiaries are at St Brigid’s School, Mokola, Ibadan and Cornerstone Orphanage, Apata, Ibadan.
The commissioning of the borehole with donation of generator set was held at St Brigid’s School, while the food items, books were donated at the orphanage home.
The items donated included rice, beans, noodles, beverages, soaps, diapers among others.
Speaking at the programme, the District Governor 9126, Funkeakpo Ken Batife, commended members of the club for their commitment, adding that that is what Rotary stands for.
He said, “Rotary Club is known for its humanitarian work in order to help the underprivileged privileged in the society.
“Rotary club is a service-oriented club; we did a borehole in one of the schools, St Bridget. Now we are again at an orphanage home.
“The Rotary Club of Ibadan-Jericho Metro was able to provide books and food items for the students.”
He encouraged the students to read the books donated.
“We want a situation where the books are put to good use. The donated books, through our partnership with University Press Plc is worth over N1.4 million, so the students need to read them so that the money does not go waste,”
Also, the club president, Bimbola Bodede encouraged the students and the school management to make judicious use of the water project.
She said: “In Rotary, our life sustenance is project to humanity, how can we help? One of our major areas of focus is in water sanitation and hygiene and most of the time, we go to places where they need water because water is life and we sink boreholes there and that is what we did at St. Bridget School, it’s water for the school and for that community.
“Also, September is basic education and literacy month so we had already planned to meet with children at the orphanage, give them a library, give them books and make sure that they cultivate a reading habit and of course you cannot just give children books and not give them food, we gave them provisions, food items and toiletries to help in the orphanage.
“The orphanage is doing a good job but we felt we could help in our own small way, so that is the essence of today, and that is some of the projects we’ve been able to do in the 2½ months of the new Rotary year.”
She commended the club’s partner, University Press (PLC) for the book donations.
Proprietor of the orphanage, Pastor Kolade Ajayi, while responding, commended the club for the gesture.
