No fewer than 700 families affected by the recent flood disaster in Yola South, which claimed 25 lives, have received relief materials from the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

The flood, which caused widespread destruction and displacement, prompted Ribadu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) North-East Zonal Vice Chairman, Mustapha Salihu, to set up a high-powered committee to secure and distribute aid to victims.

Other APC stakeholders, including Mustapha Atiku Ribadu and Umar Marafa, also supported the Yola flood victims with personal donations of N1 million each.

Speaking to journalists during the distribution, Mustapha Atiku Ribadu said the first phase of the relief programme targeted seven severely affected communities. So far, about 700 families have been screened and assisted.

“This is the first phase of the distribution of the relief package brought by NSA, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu and the North-East Vice Chairman of our party, Comrade Mustapha Salihu.

“The beneficiaries were selected from the seven identified communities worst hit by the flood, and each beneficiary will get a bag of rice, a carton of spaghetti, a carton of indomie, cooking oil and a cash token of N10,000.

“We are going to continue the screening process to ensure only the victims get the materials, despite the fact that stalwarts of APC were behind this gesture, all affected persons will benefit regardless of their political inclination.

He noted that in the spirit of humanity, the NSA has ordered more packages to the Yola flood victims, including clothing materials, drugs, food, mosquito nets, and other assorted food and non-food materials.

“As I told you earlier, NSA is really disturbed by the plight of the victims and has assured that everyone caught up by the flood will get the relief package. What we are seeing today is just the beginning; we are going to reach every victim, every family affected by the flood,” he said.

The distribution of the relief materials marked the first major step by organisations or individuals to come to the rescue of the victims since the natural disaster struck on Sunday.
