The House of Representatives on Tuesday urged the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police and other security forces in Nigeria to urgently get to the root of various unresolved kidnapping cases across the country.
This followed the adoption of a motion of urgent importance “On the need to look into cases of unresolved kidnappings and insecurity in the South-East” moved by Hon Chris Azubogu. at a plenary session presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Hon Idris Wase.
While moving the motion the lawmaker said that the House noted that there have been a lot of cases of missing persons in the South-East, particularly in Anambra State in the recent past.
According to him, the House worried about the kidnap of one Mr Obiora Agbasimalo the candidate of Labour Party for the Anambra governorship election. Agbasimalo was kidnapped on September 18, 2021, in Anambra State.
The House worried that five engineers working with Melan Consultants in Ebonyi State were also kidnapped since November 3, 2021, and nothing has also been heard about them to date.
He lamented that the numerous other unresolved cases have created a heightened sense of insecurity in the South-East.
The House was concerned that to date nothing has been heard about most of these cases.
The House said it was cognizant that these persons have families and loved ones who were already broken and left in perpetual agony.
It worried that if nothing tangible was done to provide hope for these families, “we might end up losing them too.”
The motion was unanimously supported when it was put into voice vote by the Depending Speaker Hon Idris Wase who presided over the session
The House mandated relevant Committees to work with the security agencies and report back in six weeks for further legislative action.
