A member of the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin, has faulted critics of President Bola Tinubu’s performance, saying it’s unfair to expect him to have solved all the country’s problems within his two-year tenure.
Jibrin who is also the Chairman of the House Committee on Housing and Habitat, stressed that Nigeria’s challenges pre-date the current administration and that it’s unrealistic to expect a single government to fix everything.
“When I think about it, I find it absolutely wrong for anybody to give the impression that the security challenges or any part of the country is faced with at the moment is the fault of the current administration,” Hon. Jibrin said. “We’ve had different governments over the years, and each has contributed to the challenges we’re facing today.”
Hon. Jibrin also criticised the media for focusing on problems without offering solutions.
“I’ve noticed that when you interview people, you always ask about the problems, but rarely do you ask about solutions,” he said. “I find it very difficult to get people who give access to that.”
The lawmaker defended the president’s efforts, saying that he has made progress despite the challenges.
“The president has been there for two years, and they want to pack everything.
“You see, he destroyed the economy, he destroyed the education system, he destroyed the healthcare system, he destroyed the worker system, he destroyed our social values, everything and the rest, just within two years. Yes, there’s nothing wrong in complaining, there’s nothing wrong in pointing out issues.”
Hon. Jibrin noted the importance of constructive criticism and dialogue. “If you want to criticize, you have to do it in a way that is constructive and not just fault-finding,” he said. “We need to have a national consensus and understanding of the development trajectory that we want to take.”
The lawmaker also spoke about the challenges of governance and the need for continuity and sustainability. “If you look at all the development plans, they talk about sustainability,” he said. “So long as you do not have sustainable continuity, there are so many dual turnpikes, somebody counts after that, throws it away.”
Hon. Jibrin by pointed out the need for Nigerians to be patient and understanding of the challenges facing the country.
“We need to put things into perspective and understand that development is a gradual process,” he said.
