The House of Representatives reiterated its resolve on Tuesday to carry out effective oversight and funding of the Nigerian Army and relevant agencies over the next four years.
Chairman, House Committee on Army, Hon. Abdullahi Mamudu, who gave the assurance in Abuja during the inaugural meeting of the Committee, explained that the Committee was mandated to oversee the “Nigerian Army; Ammunition Depots, Forts, Arsenal, reservations and establishments; Development projects of the Nigerian Army; Army Barracks, Landed property and appurtenances; and Annual budget estimates for the Army
“The scope of the committee’s activities also includes oversight of the Nigerian Army recruitment exercise.”
While noting that the Legislature is the only institution that distinguishes democracy from other forms of government, Hon. Mamudu observed that “in most democracies, the military and the parliaments have been working together; that is what we also hope to achieve.”
According to him, the committee’s operation would be carried out by holding regular committee meetings and examining various budgetary allocations for all Army activities in order to ensure compliance with budgetary appropriation provisions.
He also pledged the Committee’s resolve to carry out oversight functions on the Nigerian Army and hold regular briefings with the Chief of Army Staff as the need arises, as well as the budget for the Nigerian Army.
In the bid to achieve the set objectives, he disclosed that the committee has “developed a work plan that will be judicious and followed within specific periods in order to achieve its mandate.
“The work plan is a four-year template that itemises the activities of the committee.”
