The Member representing Ibadan North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Olaide Akínremi Jagaban has organised a training and advocacy workshop for youths, women traditional and community leaders in his constituency and beyond, saying it was important to teach requisite skills to help them stand on their own.
In the programme held at the Emmanuel Alayande Teachers Resource Centre, Samonda Ibadan, he incorporated an advocacy programme on peace and conflict resolution for traditional, community and religious leaders, where they were trained on handling conflicts and volatile issues that might arise in their domains, churches or mosques.
The training is part of a three-pronged training, advocacy and empowerment and capacity building programmes for his constituents and beyond done in conjunction with the National Biotechnology Development Agency.
Speaking on the essence of the training, Hon Akinremi Jagaban said traditional, community and religious leaders’ roles in maintaining peace in their spaces was imperative, saying when there is peace at the micro level, it would be translated to community and consequently the towns and the state.
He admonished them to exercise their newly-acquired skills and ideas in attending to issues that might spring up in their various localities, emphasizing that peaceful coexistence among Nigerians across the length and breadth of our nation was imperative.
Akinremi said: “The purpose of this programme is to add more value to what we currently have on ground, as far as conflict resolutions on the part of traditional and community leaders in their various jurisdictions are concerned. Achieving peaceful coexistence is important, and these sets of leaders have vital roles to play as such.”
He explained that the beneficiaries were drawn from all the 12 Wards in Ibadan North including some participants from neighbouring wards outside the constituency, regardless of their political affiliation, noting that “when there is peace it will not be for our constituency alone but for the entire state.”
Prince Akinremi said the important mediator roles of the traditional and community leaders in settling any form of conflict or rancor among their people as they are highly respected, saying consistent engagement of critical and concerned stakeholders in communities will further help to establish lasting peace, unity and progress.
“They are very much respected by people in their environments, and this is why it is easy for them to mediate when issues occur among their people. This advocacy programme has further equipped their capacity to function better than before, and to contribute in new dimensions in securing peace in their respective areas. This will help a lot in achieving the needed stability, growth and development of their various localities,” he noted.
He offered financial support for the participants just as they were given certificates of participation.
