The Nigerian Red Cross Society has built 47 temporary shelters with a borehole, toilet and provided relief materials to Mokwa flood victims in Niger state.
The National President of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga, stated this during the inauguration and handover of the facilities to the flood victims in Mokwa local government area.
He explained that two boreholes have been rehabilitated in Mokwa and two in the Rabba community to provide access to portable water for both displaced families and the host communities.
Adeaga added that Red Cross also distributed 500 dignity kits for women and girls of childbearing age and 500 non-food items packages for families to restore confidence and strength during recovery.
“Items such as plastic buckets, jerry cans and water purification tablets (Aquatabs) have been distributed to ensure access to clean drinking water.
“Dignity kits such as mobile taps for hand washing have also been provided at the temporary shelter site to promote proper hygiene and dignity”, he declared..
He said the initiative was to help alleviate the suffering of thousands displaced by the flood and provide safe spaces for protection for gender, and inclusion.
He noted that society’s work was not only about responding to disasters but also preparing for challenges.
According to him, this was through hygiene promotion, market sensitisation, focus group discussions, community meetings, flood preparedness simulation and first aid training to mitigate future disaster risks.
The national president, however, called on patriotic and law-abiding Nigerians to volunteer with the Nigerian Red Cross society, saying, “the strength of the Red Cross is not only in its name, but in its volunteers.”
He stressed that the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency had warned that 30 states and over 1,200 communities were at high risk of flooding in 2025 and emphasised the need for more hands, hearts and people willing to serve.
Adeaga assured that the society would invest in the lives of its volunteers, training them to become confident leaders who can guide others in any situation.
In his remarks, Alhaji Tanko Bala, Sarkin Hausawa, Mokwa, thanked the Red Cross for building shelters and providing dignity kits to women affected by the flood, saying, “it would go a long way in assisting the victims”.
