Drivers in the country, particularly those operating commercial vehicles, have been reminded that their recklessness behind the wheel is causing crashes, not the devil, as is often ascribed whenever accidents occur.
The assertion was made by the Bauchi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), CC Istifanus Ibrahim, during a familiarization visit to the Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi State Chapter.
He explained that the visit is part of efforts to address reckless driving and violations of traffic rules and regulations to reduce the rate of crashes in the state, soliciting the support of NUJ members in enlightening the general public on this matter.
Istifanus Ibrahim stressed the need for collaboration to help sensitize the public, particularly as the festive season approaches, with the Ember months bringing an increase in traffic. He unveiled some of the Command’s plans to ensure minimal casualties during this period.
Corps Commander Istifanus Ibrahim noted that the Command has intensified awareness efforts on the need for road safety protocols to mitigate crashes, especially during the Ember months from September to December, which include various festivities.
He emphasized that the focus now is on commuters, who are advised to always speak out against the misbehavior of drivers and to reject overloading and speeding.
According to him, the collaboration between the FRSC and NUJ aims to tackle the persistent road accidents in Bauchi State through raising awareness about responsible driving practices and the consequences of reckless driving.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Bauchi State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Comrade Umar Sa’idu, commended the FRSC for its efforts in reducing crashes in Bauchi State and urged more vigilance against those illegally using press tags on their vehicles.
The Chairman raised concerns about the rampant misuse of press tags on vehicles across the country, stating that it is a pressing issue that needs to be addressed.
Comrade Umar Sa’idu emphasized that the improper use of press tags by motorists constitutes impersonation, undermining the integrity of journalism and compromising journalistic ethics.
He urged the federal government to increase operational funding for the FRSC to effectively regulate traffic and ensure road safety.
While calling on the FRSC to deploy more personnel in strategic locations for traffic management, Umar Sa’idu assured that the NUJ will support and cooperate with the corps in addressing this issue.
