The Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (REAN) has lauded the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for the mini-grid regulations 2026 and the draft net-billing framework for renewable expansion in the country.
REAN president, Ayo Ademilua, who gave the commendation when he led a delegation to the NERC headquarters in Abuja, identified the mini-grid regulations 2026 and the draft net-billing framework as crucial drivers for expanding renewable energy access in Nigeria. Ademilua also commended the commission for its transparency and efficiency in processing mini-grid permit applications and giving room for developers to operate.
The meeting discussed the updated regulations, and the increase of the mini-grid development threshold to five megawatts (MW) expected to boost investment and allow for larger-scale projects.

Speaking, NERC’s Commissioner for Research and Data Analytics, Dr Fouad Animashaun, however said the commission’s role in the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) is not to execute projects directly but to create an enabling, well-regulated environment that supports private sector growth and expands grid access.
Animashaun assured the association of sustained partnership with focus on capacity building and stakeholder engagement expected to fast-track the growth of Nigeria’s renewable energy sector.
A statement posted on X by NERC said the highlights of the meeting centred on policy commendation, increased thresholds, regulatory support and clarification of NERC’s mandate.
