To commemorate the end of the holy month of Ramadan, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has provided the Oko Opo Foundation with 30 bags of 50kg rice which will be distributed to underprivileged widows and children in Ogun.
The representatives of NCS, Assistant Customs Comptroller, Mr Olabode Akinola; NCS Superintendent Officer, Mr Ismaheel Alarape and a Deputy Superintendent Customs, Lagos, Mr Kaffu Samuel, said the donation is in furtherance of the agency’s mantra of supporting notable not-for-profit organisations in a bid to alleviate the suffering of the have-nots in the society.
The drive follows the empowerment of 150 widows in December 2024 by the foundation with cash, food items, and medications.
It was learned that the donation by Customs was finalised during a peace parley between Customs and the promoter of the foundation, Dr Babatunde Adeyemo after he escaped a near-fatal shooting by a Customs official in December.
Adeyemo had during the peace meeting with the senior Customs officials declined personal compensation as earlier filled by his legal counsel, but requested the agency to provide support underprivileged widows in the society.
He pleaded with the NCS and its leadership to give the officer a “second chance” and “not relieve him of his job” over the alleged professional misconduct.
In his response, Dr Adeyemo said the donation from Customs to the foundation is another victory for widows in the country, adding that the food items will be shared with the last grain while a token will also be provided to the widows to celebrate the exit of the holy month of Ramadan.
