US President, Donald Trump asserted that Russian President, Vladimir Putin endured significant challenges during his time in office, particularly due to the investigations into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election.
“Let me tell you, Putin went through a hell of a lot with me. He went through a phony witch hunt where they used him and Russia, Russia, Russia,” Trump told reporters, standing alongside Senator J.D. Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The remark came after a tense exchange between Trump, Vance, and Zelenskyy, during which a reporter questioned Trump on the possibility of Russia breaking a ceasefire. Trump dismissed the premise of the question.
“What if they — what if anything? What if a bomb drops on your head right now?” he responded. “OK, what have they broken? I don’t know. They broke it with [former President Joe] Biden, because Biden didn’t respect him. They didn’t respect [former President Barack] Obama. They respect me.”
Trump’s comments highlighted his longstanding claims that Putin held him in higher regard than his predecessors and that the Russia investigation was a politically motivated attack against him.
