Postal deliveries to the United States have dropped drastically following Washington’s imposition of new tariffs, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) announced on Saturday, citing a report by news agency AFP.
The UN’s postal cooperation agency revealed that mail traffic to the US has fallen by over 80 percent, with 88 countries either fully or partially suspending services in response to the tariffs.
UPU Director General Masahiko Metoki said the agency is urgently working on “the rapid development of a new technical solution that will help get mail moving to the United States again.”

The tariffs, introduced as part of Washington’s broader trade measures, have made international mail handling more complex and costly for foreign postal operators. Several countries have complained of operational and financial strain in maintaining deliveries under the new rules.
The UPU, which coordinates postal services across 192 member states, said consultations are underway to find temporary measures while long-term adjustments are considered.
This disruption adds to escalating trade tensions between the United States and its partners, as tariff hikes on a wide range of goods continue to draw criticism from businesses and governments worldwide.
