An unidentified policeman has been killed and others injured as gunmen suspected to be cultists, attacked a police team in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
The suspected cultists also reportedly escaped with riffles, belonging to the slain officer and his colleagues.
The police spokesperson of Lagos State command, Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the death of the policeman to NIGERIAN TRIBUNE.
The unidentified deceased policemen and his colleagues were reportedly on duty at Enuren junction along Itokin road on Friday night, when they were attacked.
Sources told the NIGERIAN TRIBUNE that the policemen were until the incident attached to Imota Divisional Police Station.
It was, however, gathered that the police launched a manhunt for the killer cult members on Saturday during an invasion of their hideout in Emuren ,a town the Sagamu Local Government area of Lagos State
Sources in the area said that ” The cult members must have taken the policemen on awareness ,when they opened fire on them.”
He also added that “The cult members in Emuren have become untouchable . They now work for a popular land grabber in Ikorodu.”
The residents of some parts of Ikorodu described the attack on the policemen as a new height to the activities of cult members in Ikorodu and neighbouring Ogun State.
Another resident, who pleaded anonymity, while speaking with the NIGERIAN TRIBUNE said “Cult members have been on the rampage in recent times in Ikorodu and its environs.”
“No fewer than four persons have been killed by these cult members, who have become tools for land grabbers.”
The resident also said that “These cultists have been traced to Emuren many times in the past but they have continued to terrorize our people.”
“I learnt that the police went to Emuren on Saturday to look for them. They should constantly raid the town and flush the criminals out before it is too late.”
When contacted, Hundeyin confirmed the death of the policeman. He said, “Yes I can confirm the death of a policeman.”
