The Imo State Police Command has vowed to bring to justice those responsible for the gruesome killing of seven persons during coordinated attacks across three communities in Arondizuogu, Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State.
Gunmen reportedly stormed the communities of Ndi-Ejezie, Umualaoma, and Ndianwanta Uno on Thursday night, opening fire on residents. Several people were injured in the attacks, which occurred between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, said the state Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, condemned the attacks in Imo and described them as “barbaric, inhumane, and totally unacceptable.”
CP Danjuma assured the public that the Command had deployed operational and intelligence teams to track down the perpetrators. “The Command will stop at nothing to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those behind this senseless assault,” he said.
According to the statement, the CP is personally leading tactical units in a sweeping operation across the affected areas. He added that normalcy had returned and proactive security measures were in place to prevent further attacks.
While extending condolences to the bereaved families and praying for the swift recovery of those injured, CP Danjuma called for public cooperation. “We urge residents to remain calm, vigilant, and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station,” the statement said.
In a related development, Stand for Humanity Foundation, a human rights organisation, also condemned the attacks. In a statement issued in Owerri on Friday, the Founder of the Foundation, Chidiebube Okeoma, described the killings as “provocative, barbaric, and anti-human.”
According to Okeoma, eyewitnesses reported that three armed men riding a motorbike randomly opened fire on civilians, killing shop owners, customers, and passersby enjoying the night breeze.
“This is nothing short of a massacre. The recurring killings of innocent people in Imo State and the South East must stop,” he said.
The Foundation called on the Commissioner of Police and other security chiefs to urgently intensify efforts to arrest the attackers and restore peace in the state.
