
The police in Ekiti State have arrested a 29-year old man, Adeyemi Adewale, and two others for allegedly planning to murder a chieftain of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state.
Police Commissioner in the Ekiti command, Abdullahi Chafe, who briefed newsmen in Ado Ekiti, on Thursday, on the arrest of the suspects as well as on other successes recorded by the command, said Fatai Adejumo, 46 and Abayomi Olubokun, 71, were also arrested along with Adewale.
Chafe alleged that they were plotting to forcefully take power from the Chairman of NURTW in the state, Mr Clement Adekola.
The CP said: “During investigation, the first suspect confessed that the weapons belong to some group of NURTW members who are planning to attack the current leadership of the union, led by Adekola with a motive to take over the leadership of the union.
“Further investigations by Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) led to the arrest of two other suspects. Efforts are in progress to arrest others who are at large.”
He regretted that a chairman of NURTW in the state was shot dead in 2014 and said “we must work hard to ensure that this kind of thing doesn’t happen again in the state.”
The CP said another landmark achievement recorded by the command, was the arrest of a 35-year old Adeboye Adegbola Eletu for alleged ritual activities and cultism and pointed out that exhibits recovered from him included charms and artifacts.
He also said the command had rejigged the community policing department of the command by co-opting the traditional rulers, market men and women, eminent personalities, students, artisans and other stakeholders into it, in compliance with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris.
Speaking on the coming election in the state, Chafe charged politicians in the state to play according to the rules in their activities when the election comes.
He thanked the people of the state for their cooperation with the Police Command, saying “traditional rulers, community leaders and the various communities have been so helpful with useful information and we thank them because this has made Ekiti to remain the state with the least crime rate in the country.”
The Police paraded a total of 14 other robbery suspects, among which were Ogunleye Shola, Adedayo Ebenezer, Lasisi Afees, Ojo Oba and Ojo Oluwafemi for allegedly invaded Oyan Orete farmstead in Ijan Ekiti, Gbonyin Local Government area of the State and killed one Ramon Olasunkanmi.
Chafe assured that his men would be apolitical and fair to all political parties for the success of the 2018 election.
He commended the state government and the general public for supplying the police with veracious information, saying this has helped in combating crime and criminalities.
