The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a commercial driver with bundles of fake N1,000 notes at the Guru Maharaj area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ibadan on Friday night.
The driver, who identified himself as Akande, was nabbed during a proactive stop-and-search operation conducted by the Federal Highway Patrol team on the Ibadan/Lagos Expressway.
Confirming his arrest in a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, CSP Adewale Osifeso said the driver of a green Sienna vehicle with the registration number Lagos FKJ 443 YG was fidgeting when stopped for a random check by the patrol team.
This, according to the statement, prompted a thorough check of the vehicle, which was en route to Osogbo.
The search eventually led to the discovery of bundles of fake N1,000 notes perfectly tucked inside plastic parcel.
The statement read, “During the investigation, officers discovered approximately One Million Naira (₦1,000,000) in one-thousand-naira banknotes, which bore only three unique serial numbers: 235923- #500,000 (500 notes); 235922- #300,000 (300 notes); and 235921- #200,000 (200 notes), all concealed in a transparent plastic parcel secured with ample tape.
Upon questioning, the suspect, Akande, a male, indicated that he was acting as a courier, having received the cash from an unidentified individual in Ojota, Lagos.
“He stated that he was instructed to deliver the funds to Osogbo but had not been given the name or contact information of the recipient. Interestingly, he claimed that he had been told the package contained body cream.”
