The police in Lagos State have arrested a private school teacher, Stella Nwadigo, who was captured in a viral video maltreating a three-year-old pupil.
The police in the state have also begun investigations into the incident.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Education, has also begun investigations into the incident.
Officials of the Lagos State Government are expected to visit the school today (Thursday) as part of the investigations into the child abuse.
The video of the incident went viral on the internet early Thursday, drawing widespread condemnations, criticism, and comments.
The incident was said to have happened at Christ-Mitots School in the Ola Inukan area of Isawo in Ikorodu.
In the viral video, the arrested teacher was seen physically abusing the pupil, identified as 3-year-old Abayomi Michael.
The Nigerian Tribune gathered that the teacher was initially arrested by the operatives of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corp and was handed over to the police.
The image maker in charge of the state police command, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a short statement on his X handle (formerly Twitter), confirmed the arrest of the teacher.
He said, “The teacher has been taken into custody and is currently undergoing investigation. Further necessary actions will follow to ensure justice is served.”
Reacting, the state’s Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education said the Office of Quality Assurance under the ministry had already taken up the matter, adding that a team from the department would visit the school on Thursday for investigation.
The Head of the Public Affairs unit of the department, Mr Kayode Sutton, who reacted, added that a comprehensive report of the Quality Assurance office’s findings from the visit would be submitted to the commissioner of the ministry, Mr Jamiu Alli-Balogun, once it is ready.
