The Yobe State Police Command has made another significant breakthrough in the fight against vandalism of public infrastructure, as it arrested two suspects in connection with the crime.
The Command PPRO, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, in a statement issued on Sunday, stated that the Yusufari Divisional Police Headquarters apprehended the two suspects, Kabiru Ibrahim, 23, of Sabon Garin Gashu, and Abubakar Abubakar, 24, of Bade LGA, for dismantling transformer components and cables, causing severe damage at Sunomari Area of Yusufari Town.
“The suspected vandals in Yobe were arrested based on credible information, and during interrogation, they confessed to the crime, as an investigation is underway for subsequent prosecution.
“Following their arrest, youths from the community gathered, expressing outrage over the suspects’ actions, which they claimed were habitual.
“In a bid to take the law into their own hands, the youths attempted to lynch the suspects and set fire to a motorcycle belonging to one of the suspects,” the statement read.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Ado, has condemned the acts of vandalism and urged the community to maintain restraint, allowing the law to take its full course.
He emphasised that the Command will not condone vigilantism and will ensure that justice is served through due process, urging the public to “Always report suspicious activities to the nearest Police station or security formation in your areas.”
