The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, has launched an investigation and arrested four suspects over the mysterious disappearance of a newborn baby at a hospital in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.
Tribune Online gathered that the baby, who was born around 8 p.m. on Sunday, went missing in the early hours of Monday at the Primary Healthcare Centre located in the Okeiyinmi area of the state capital.
According to sources, the baby’s disappearance was discovered when one of the nurses on duty attempted to attend to her in the morning.
It was gathered that a woman, who gained access to the ward, made away with the baby in the early hours of Monday when the personnel on duty briefly stepped out of the ward.
One of the sources said, “The woman came last night to the healthcare centre for delivery, and we observed another person in the ward with her, speaking the same language, which made the personnel assume they were relatives.
“The woman gave birth around 8 p.m. on Sunday. This other person was with her in the ward since then, only to take the baby away around 4 a.m. on Monday.
“The mother of the baby did not know her from anywhere, but just because they could conveniently communicate, she felt comfortable with her in the ward.
“Unfortunately, when the baby’s mother was sleeping and the nurse on duty went to attend to another delivery, the strange woman took the baby away.
“The security guard on duty couldn’t stop her because, according to him, he saw a pregnant woman—apparently, she had wrapped the baby around her belly.”
When contacted by the Nigerian Tribune, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Abutu Sunday, confirmed the incident.
While revealing that four persons, including the mother, had been arrested in connection with the missing baby, he added that investigations had commenced into the incident.
The PPRO said, “The CP has directed the State CID to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the recovery of the baby.
“Meanwhile, four suspects have been arrested in connection with the crime and are giving us credible information that will aid the investigation process.”
