Dr Idara Bassey, the Lagos-based medical doctor who was declared wanted in connection with the death of a 36-year-old woman, Abiola, during a buttock enlargement surgery, is now in police custody.

The tragic incident occurred at a clinic in Lekki Phase 1, where Abiola had undergone the procedure.

Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), the procedure Abiola sought, is a popular cosmetic surgery that enhances the buttocks by transferring excess fat from other areas of the body.

Unfortunately, the surgery led to her untimely death, sparking an investigation.

Dr Bassey, who initially fled after the incident on August 26, 2024, was arrested and is currently under investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Panti.

The arrest was confirmed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin.

The incident was first reported by Abiola’s driver at the Maroko Police Division.

According to the police, upon arriving at the clinic, Abiola was administered an injection by a nurse under the direction of the clinic owner.

Moments later, Abiola lost consciousness and began gasping for breath, prompting her driver to rush her to another hospital in Lekki Phase 1.

Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Police detectives visited the scene, gathered evidence, inspected, and photographed Abiola’s remains, and subsequently transported her body to a morgue for autopsy.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death is ongoing.
