The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, on Tuesday after completing the party’s presidential screening exercise, said he would prioritise national unity and security if elected President, stressing that good governance must ensure the safety and wellbeing of citizens.
Obi said national unity remains the foundation for achieving security, economic stability and inclusive development.
According to him, the vision of a better Nigeria begins with building a united country guided by the principles of the Constitution, particularly provisions on federal character and inclusivity.
“We want mothers to feel safe when their children head to school or work. We envision a Nigeria where travel throughout the country can be done without fear.
“Many Nigerians currently go to sleep uncertain about their next meal, and this situation must be transformed,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor said insecurity and economic hardship have left many citizens living in fear and uncertainty, adding that his administration would prioritise restoring public confidence and improving living standards.
He also called for stronger efforts against corruption, insisting that public resources should serve the collective interest rather than enrich individuals.
“We need a country where public resources are not turned into private wealth. Politicians are too focused on upcoming elections while the citizens are suffering. This has to change,” he added.
Speaking on the duration and nature of the screening process, Obi described it as evidence of internal democracy within the NDC, saying the exercise was designed to ensure aspirants meet constitutional requirements and provide necessary documentation.
“The NDC is committed to doing things right. The purpose of the screening was to ensure candidates meet constitutional qualifications and can provide necessary documentation,” he said.
On reports suggesting he may emerge as the party’s sole presidential candidate, Obi said he was not aware whether other aspirants had submitted applications.
“I don’t know if anyone else has submitted an application. Until the party officially names me as the only candidate, that remains to be seen,” he stated.
Obi also commended the screening committee chaired by former Ebonyi State Governor, Sam Egwu, for conducting what he described as a thorough and professional exercise.
He further commended the leadership of the NDC for upholding democratic principles during the screening process.
