Former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, says he will be stepping back briefly from public engagements following medical advice.
Obi made the disclosure in a statement posted on his official X handle on Saturday, explaining that he began feeling unwell while attending an event in Enugu.
“Earlier in Enugu, I was not feeling well. I visited the hospital where the doctor gave me some medication and advised me to take a day or two days’ rest. In obedience to the doctor’s advice, I will not be able to meet up with all my scheduled engagements within and outside the country this weekend,” Obi wrote.
The politician apologised for any inconveniences his absence might cause, appealing for public understanding.

Before the announcement, Obi highlighted some of his recent activities, including speaking at a tourism event in Enugu and making a ₦10 million donation to support the Aguata Diocese of the Church of Nigeria in acquiring and revitalising Good Hope Specialist Hospital, Isulo, in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
He praised the Diocese’s plans to transform the facility into a comprehensive health complex with a School of Nursing, Midwifery, and Health Technology.
“Healthcare remains one of the most meaningful investments we can make. Faith-based organisations have shown, time and again, that with the right support, they can deliver excellence,” he said.
From Isulo, Obi travelled to Owerri, Imo State, where he attended a dinner organised by Barrister Nnaemeka Maduagwu in honour of former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.
Despite his brief withdrawal, Obi reaffirmed his commitment to supporting healthcare initiatives and building what he described as “a healthier Nigeria.”
