Persevere in pursuits of your life goals, Beautiful Nubia tells teenagers

A Nigerian-born songwriter, music composer, and bandleader, Segun Akinlolu, popularly known as Beautiful Nubia has encouraged young people to persevere in the pursuit of their life goals till they succeed.

He stated this at the closing ceremony of the 2021 LifePAD Summer Academy organised by the Building Nations Initiative (BNI).

Akinlolu addressed the teenagers on the topic “the role of culture in promoting youth development”. He noted that culture goes beyond the food, dress, dance, music that is common to a people.

He placed emphasis on the teenagers’ mindset about cultural heritage, as they are expected to embrace culture as moral values that are essential to becoming responsible and productive members of society. Explaining further, he listed honesty, trust, hard work, patience, and contentment as five core values that young people must embrace, even right from adolescence.

In her welcome speech at the closing ceremony, the resident manager of the BNI Youth Centre, University of Ibadan, Oluwaseyi Ndoh, explained that the goal of the summer programme is to positively empower teenagers to become productive members of society.

While presenting certificates of excellence to winners of various competitions, the founder and CEO of Building Nations Initiative (BNI), John Oluwadero, revealed that the LifePAD curriculum was intentionally designed to promote the holistic development of young people through the various learning and activity tracks that actively engage the participants.

In a remark given by a parent, she confirmed that through the dance and drama activities at LifePAD, her children are now confident to speak in public and interact with their fellow peers.

The 2021 LifePAD Summer Academy which was held from the 23rd of August through Friday, 3rd of September 2021, had facilitators who took the teenagers on emotional intelligence, digital skills, creative thinking, public speaking, basic theatre skills, cross-cultural awareness, social awareness, and citizenship education, collaboration skills, teamwork practices, as well as handcrafts like baking, bead making, among others. They also went on an excursion to the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, where they were exposed to opportunities available in the aquaculture and fisheries industry.

The teenagers were also led on a community service-learning experience to Idia Village, University of Ibadan, where they had a neighbourhood clean-up exercise.
