The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (UK), Keir Starmer and his Canadian counterpart, Prime Minister Mark Carney, have both welcomed the efforts by the United States (US) President, Donald Trump, to bring peace to Ukraine, but insisted that peace must “not be imposed upon it”.
This was agreed during a phone call between the two leaders on Monday, amidst concerns of Ukraine’s exclusion from the ceasefire deal with Russia.
Recall that following a meeting between the US envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff and the Russian President, Vladimir Putin last week, Tribune Online reports President Trump’s readiness to meet his Russian counterpart in Alaska on Friday.
According to a statement made available on the UK government’s website, Starmer and Carney discussed their steadfast support for Ukraine, and an end to the killing of people and Russia’s war of aggression.
Both parties emphasised that Ukraine’s future must entail freedom, sovereignty, and self-determination.
They expressed support for ongoing international efforts, led by Trump, to achieve peace, and agreed that such peace should be developed in partnership with Ukraine, not forced upon it.
Both leaders agreed they would continue to work closely with President Trump and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine over the coming days.
